Award winning community pub in Royal Windsor

The Alma

Welcome to

The Alma

Welcome to the Alma – a beautiful community pub on the outskirts of Windsor.  We are looking forward to welcoming you.

The pub was completely refurbished in July 2023 with a 130 seat sunny beer garden, weather permitting. Since 1901, our mission has stayed the same: to serve Windsor quality beers, cask ales, wines, spirits and food.  Serving quality, locally sourced food, our team will go above and beyond to make your visit one to remember. We welcome dogs with friendly owners. We are extremely proud of being a hub within our community. Come on in and enjoy Windsors’ favourite pint. Quiz on Tuesdays, Open Mic Night on a Wednesday and live music Thursdays. See our events page for more information.

Our History

The Alma has been a staple of the local community since at least 1901.

First ran by J. W. Wilson, The Alma has been located on the junction of Springfield & Elm Road for over 120 years.

It seems The Alma, including some other local Windsor pubs may be named about events, places and/or people connected to the Crimean War which took place between October 1853 – February 1856.

The Alma is a river in the Crimea towards Balaclava. The battle of The Alma was fought between an allied expeditionary force which was made up of French, British and Turkish forces. Russian forces defended the Crimean Peninsula on 20 September 1854.

Looking back on our history, an 18th Century map will show the barracks, then called Cavalry in its place and behind it an open green land. There was, up until 1898, very little development of homes or buildings in this area. Windsor was still largely green and the population centred around the castle.

When the railway arrived in Windsor, it bought men and families seeking work, pushing the boundaries of what we consider modern day living. No doubt all of them were fond of Windsor’s great pubs.

A later map shows the Springfield area developed, a full street, housing and a little shop (which was then opposite the pub!) The slums which were in place had been destroyed. By 1901, the Springfield area had come to include a Public House called The Alma (that’s us!)

The most common story regarding the naming of our pub takes us to the early Victorian era. Many of the British troops which were sent to fight in the Crimean War were dispatched from the Cavalry located behind The Alma. Many believe that the pub was named after these soldiers in recognition of their engagement.
